Custom News is a $0.99 app that let’s you customize the categories of news from different newspapers and other news sources. Thirteen different news sources, four of them in the bottom tray and the rest from the “more” icon. Within each of these, the use can select what categories of news to display from that source.
Once you configure it with what you want to see, the browsing of the news if fairly straightforward. Tapping on a headline brings up the rest of the story. You can watch a video of the app in action on YouTube.
Besides suggesting more news sources (wire services and FNC to balance CNN, and of course my local Atlanta paper), the only other think I can suggest is an option of adding to and deleting from the current news sources so that itbecomes more expandable and customizable. I would also like to see the news categorized differently. Instead if choosing the USA Today, for example, and browsing over their top stories, I would like to start out with Tech News and have a list of all the sources with that category to choose from. Ultimately, the stories from the Tech Category of all selected sources could display together in one list. Sharing a story over email, facebook, Twitter, or other means would also be a plus. Finally, some way to mark the age of the story and whether or nor you have already read it would be nice as well.
All in all, it is a cheap price for the kind of fix in can give the news junky. The clean interface makes it quick to get what you need. You could do worse than trying this app out. And to help you do so, here are some promo codes – first come first serve!
