Rail Adventures 3D is a $1.99 game in the App Store. In a way, it reminds me of the racing games from Chillingo that I’ve recently reviewed. In this case, you are in an ore cart rolling down the tracks in a mine. Controls are fairly simple, you can apply breaks to slow down your speed, grab thing along the sides that you may need, fire on the skeletal and other live or formerly alive enemies, and “jump” over boxes and such that may be in your way. It’s not rocket science, and I found the ability to concentrate on these other aspects of the game as opposed to steering to be a bit more entertaining over other racing games I’ve played.
The 3D graphics are nice, and, as I said, I like not having to steer, but the game left me oddly searching for more. There didn’t seem to be some sense of achievement. It would be nice if there was some scoring mechanism where you were scored based on how fast you got through a level and how much stuff you accumulated or killed in the process. If these could be posted in an OpenFeint type of leaderboard or something, it would really add something to the game – a sense of competition and accomplishment that seems to be missing.
